There is this song that touches something so incredibly deep within me. And it’s done so with millions of other people:
(BTW, here is an really electrifying version by Cher)
Can anybody tell me whether this song is the ultimate believer’s song or the ultimate unbeliever’s song?
I know that many people (including U2 itself) have called it a gospel song. But when I once told my friends, in the midst of my doubts, that this song expresses something so real within me, it strangely felt more like a confession of “atheism” rather than faith — just look at the title of the song…
Wow, I’d never really thought about the lyrics that closely (google “still haven’t found what i’m looking for lyrics”). It must be the most overtly Christian song to ever make it into the Top 10.
BTW, have you heard the truly “gospel” version on “Rattle and Hum”?
PS – this is more where I’m at.
What a song!
I didn’t even know it.
When people glorify seeking as some kind of constantly gratifying lifestyle, I wish I could sometimes just sing (or shout) into their face that seeking can make for a “desperate man”; and trying to “find the key to fifty million fables” is quite exhausting and can make you angry, too. it’s not just fun.
Enjoy!
And this one.
Thanks for the links!!
I like the gospel version you pointed to, but not as much as the Only-U2-without-gospel-choir-version (which is kind of strange because usually I LOVE gospel music and black choirs).
“The seeker” does have great lyrics. btw, how old are you – do you know the seeker song from the days of your own youth
?
Haha, the power of hiding behind a keyboard! No, I’m 37 – so not quite born when that song was recorded. I like to have at least a Greatest Hits CD of classic / influential bands like the Who on my shelf.
yes… hiding behind a keyboard. That’s a good thing about blogs. Being more anonymous helps to be honest….
oooph, just had a deadline today which made me work all night, so I’ll have to answer comments (and post new issues) tomorrow…
